You have to admire the ’share your hair’ initiative of two young Merrickville sisters, Peyton and Taylor Horning (ages 9 and 11 respectively), who are gathering hair from local hair salons to help soak up oil from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.
The girls are aiming to gather 500 pounds of hair (enough to soak up 50,000 litres of oil) to send to Matter of Trust (www.matteroftrust.org), an organization turning hair into mats and booms to soak up thousands of litres of oil. Hundreds of volunteers in the Gulf have already made over 10 miles of hair booms which, astonishingly, can be used up to 100 times, by wringing them out, before they need to be replaced.
Hearing the Merrickville sisters’ story, we were inspired to enlist a few Toronto-based salons to collect their hair clippings to help support the cause. We have also made a donation to Matter of Trust. Check out what they have done!
